The best introduction to poetry is a RELAXED one. We want our kids to see poetry as simply playing with language and discovering the magic of imagination!

We deliver the instruction AND the optimal “chill” environment.

We begin with no assumptions. We start with an overview to orient your family to poetry — no prior experience needed!

Playing with Poetry: Exploration is for the whole family! One tuition—your ENTIRE family! No one feels put on the spot. It can be a group activity.

We are open to fun topics—whatever your kids want! Pepperoni! Pancakes! Nerf guns! Jellyfish! Baseball! We’ve seen poems on them all!

We help identify poetic devices that your kids are already using all the time! Metaphor, enjambment, personification, onomatopoeia, and more.

Pair this class with tea and cookies, and you and your kids will have a great month!

Yes! This is a family class.

Parents interact with the instructor, work with their children and then post their work to the Brave Writer® online classroom for them (though children are welcome to post directly, as well).

Enroll the entire family in this class for one affordable price and get ready to dive deep into this fascinating topic!

High school students are welcome to take this class on their own, or they may post separately from the rest of the family if younger siblings are also taking the class.

Week by Week

Week One

Families get acquainted with analysis of poems, considering narrator, structure, rhyme, vocabulary, and themes as they enjoy reading poetry aloud together. Writing this week focuses on couplet and tercet stanza forms.

Week Two

The long tradition of poetry is explored this week with traditional poetry. Writers try their hand at quatrain stanza, limerick, and palindrome poems.

Week Three

This week, writers go rogue, practicing alternative poetry forms like the fragment, the “After…” poem, and the Kenning poem.

Week Four

Families round out the class with an exploration of “found” poems, revealing poems from within other longer text. The cento, black-out, and book spine poetic forms are up this week!

Word on the Street

Since she has always been a reluctant writer, I was nervous as we got closer and closer to the writing part, rather than just reading. But I was surprised! While I sat and labored over my poem, she looked up and chirped "I'm done! I did two."
