Karen Edmisten

Once upon a pre-homeschooling time, I assumed “an education” was “that thing my daughters would get in school.” When I discovered home education, my definition evolved into “a delight-driven love of learning.” Influenced by John Holt and Charlotte Mason, the Edmisten house (aka Green Gables School) revolved around reading aloud, writing, discussing, drawing, and playing (with math thrown in because—sigh—we all need it.) When pressed to define my style, I've always said, “Talking is most of our curriculum.” I homeschooled two daughters through high school and still have one teen at home.

A freelance writer and the author of five books, I also blog at KarenEdmisten.com. I host a weekly writing group for my daughters and their friends and have loved watching them grow from shy scriveners, embarrassed to share their work, to a gang who couldn’t wait to read their stories aloud and tackle National Novel Writing Month.

I was born in Massachusetts, and have lived in Washington, Alaska, Florida, and I now call Nebraska home. I love writing, drinking coffee, plowing through my To Be Read pile (when I'm not tripping over it), walking while listening to podcasts, and—still!—reading aloud to my teenager.
