[Activities overlap with the former Write for Fun: Go Wild course]

For kids, experimentation and play are intuitive ways to absorb information. The wheels are turning, turning, turning as they tear your house apart while creating the scene of a shipwreck or battle!

This period in their cognitive development is rich in imaginative thinking and enthusiasm.

At Brave Writer, we focus on “growing a mind”—facilitating depth in learning as kids

  • read
  • experience
  • encounter

Your child’s life is the best source for writing. We show them how to dig deep for words in their family, pets, friends, sports, travel, and artistic interests. Our surprising activities correspond to your learning goals.

Class Overview

Made With You in Mind

Building Brave Writers: Description gives kids new experiences with freewriting, word play, and narrative writing. The activities are creative writing exploration techniques that help students expand their use of language and the key writing tactic of vivid description.

Most importantly, this class helps solidify a regular freewriting routine. Your kids learn the value of freewriting as a method to move the ideas that live inside to the page. Freewriting is the core skill they'll need as they move on to high school writing!

Building Brave Writers: Description features

  • Manageable workload, plus a little structure
  • Only 3-week commitment
  • Practice having gentle deadlines
  • Friendly support from our writing coach!

Why freewriting?

It’s time to dispel one of the greatest myths in education: that learning needs to feel hard to work.

We don’t adhere to the old adage of “no pain, no gain.”

You’d be surprised how much kids learn when they respond to fascinating prompts in this class without having to wrestle their ideas into strict writing formats!

Quality writing requires that loose, joyful element:

  • Structure and play.
  • Practice and experimentation.
  • Mechanics and expression.

In Building Brave Writers, we balance writing practice with writing adventures that kids love. To help students discover the joy and power of their writing voices, the feedback from the instructor focuses on encouraging the content and impact on the reader rather than mechanical accuracy (spelling, punctuation, grammar).

Week by Week

Week One

This week students seek out words, words, and more words! Writers are on a constant hunt for words that tantalize and inspire. Students will curate a personal list of words and use them to describe objects around them.

Week Two

Students will experience their immediate environment in a new way. They'll put on a writer's special lens to go experience something new to write about and explore the personality of a house.

Week Three

Students will learn two more ways to use words creatively—writing in or around a shape that you'll cut from paper and going on a color walk.

Word on the Street

The class was INCREDIBLE! The pace was perfect, the tasks were so creative & the feedback was very encouraging, personal, inspiring & constructive. Reading her feedback made my daughter want to write more!

Jen (Parent)

Thank you sooo much for such an unbelievable time, it has made me that much better at writing.

Arya, 12

I usually don't share any of my writing (ever) so this was a good chance to meet other writers and get inspiration.

Nicole, 13

I just sat down and wrote and was confident. That was a first for me, and I really believe it came from this class.

Sierra, 15
