[Activities overlap with the former Write for Fun: Fly High course]

I get it. Your inbox is crammed with tips and ideas for writing with your kids. Your Pinterest board too!

You’d like to get to those one day! And to make it enjoyable!

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and guilty.

We’re here to help! This is the class where we implement our best activities for you!

(We’ll bring the enthusiasm too, so you can go and reheat your coffee for the hundredth time!)

Class Overview

Made With You in Mind

Building Brave Writers: Experience offers a frolic through a slew of entertaining, active writing processes that get your children’s creative juices flowing!

While your kids are having a blast, you don’t have to feel like you aren’t doing enough!

Along the way, they are getting no-pressure experimentation with the essential skill of "show don't tell" that all professional writers use!

Most importantly, this class helps solidify a regular freewriting routine. Your kids learn the value of freewriting as a method to move the ideas that live inside to the page. Freewriting is the core skill they'll need as they move on to high school writing!

This class is perfect for

  • Manageable workload, a little structure
  • Only 3-week commitment
  • Practice having gentle deadlines/structure
  • Friendly support from our writing coach!

Why freewriting?

It’s time to dispel one of the greatest myths in education: that learning needs to feel hard to work.

We don’t adhere to the old adage of “no pain, no gain.”

You’d be surprised how much kids learn when they respond to fascinating prompts in this class without having to wrestle their ideas into strict writing formats!

Quality writing requires that loose, joyful element:

  • Structure and play.
  • Practice and experimentation.
  • Mechanics and expression.

In Building Brave Writers, we balance writing practice with writing adventures that kids love. To help students discover the joy and power of their writing voices, the feedback from the instructor focuses on encouraging the content and impact on the reader rather than mechanical accuracy (spelling, punctuation, grammar).

Week by Week

Week One

Class begins with a description of a personal memory. Students will sharpen their writing skills by describing a small moment in vivid detail as they discover how to help readers feel part of the scene.

Week Two

Students experience the fact that writers all bring a perspective to their descriptions. As they relate a memory and then interview a family member to get their take, differences in recollection become apparent.

Week Three

This week is all about inventions. Students will take a look around the house with a new eye to finding inventions that matter to them. Then they’ll turn their creative brains to insert their invention into an original story.

Word on the Street

After this, I will probably approach writing in a different way, instead of moaning and groaning about having to do writing.

Angela, 12

This class made me realize that you can make writing fun and interesting if you find a topic you like.

Eli, 12

We will be looking at taking more classes - I appreciate the detailed feedback and positively stated comments. It helps reassure both me, as the parent, and my child that we are accomplishing our goals in our learning adventure.

Kristi (Parent)

I used to think writing was boring, but now I love it!

Ethan, 11
