Passionate Minecrafters love playing and teaming up with fellow fans. This class goes beyond fun adventures and in-game achievements. We help kids channel their love of gaming into lively, energetic writing! 

If your child: 

  • knows their way around a crafting table
  • spends hours building the perfect base, mining in the caves, or seeking adventures
  • can spot a creeper (before it spots them) . . .

Class Overview

Made With You in Mind

Punch a tree. Explore mysterious biomes. Build a cozy cottage—or a sprawling fortress. 

Then write about it.

In this one-of-a-kind writing class, Minecraft is the launch pad for observation, journaling, persuasive writing, description, storytelling, and more. Students create their own Minecraft worlds and follow a series of weekly game goals, gathering resources, crafting tools, building a home base, and setting out on an adventure. Along the way, they'll learn how to transform their in-game experiences into vivid, engaging writing. 

This class is designed for students ages 9-14 who are ready to take their play (and writing skills) to the next level. 

Highlights include

  • Journaling practice: Keep an adventure logbook of experiences
  • Skill building: Bring the game to life with rich sensory detail
  • Creative writing: Explore persuasive, descriptive, and narrative writing, using the game as a launchpad
  • Connect: Join fellow Minecraft fans in optional discussions and sharing activities

Any edition of the game—Java or Bedrock— will do (purchase separately). And this class is repeatable! While the class structure remains the same, the dynamic of new participants, new Minecraft worlds, and new adventures makes for fresh gameplay each time. 

Good to know: Minecraft has fantasy elements such as magic, fantastical creatures, monsters, weapons, and perilous action. Gamers who prefer to play in peaceful mode can still complete the class activities. 

Some activities in class include use of a private Padlet board.

Week by Week

Week One

Gamers get the lay of the land around spawn and practice making sensory observations. They begin their logbook, which will be used to record their experiences throughout class.

Week Two

Participants gather materials as they engage in gameplay, adding to their logbooks as they go. Writers brush up on their persuasion skills as they try to convince Mojang of a hot new idea.

Week Three

Time to upgrade those bases (and update those logbooks)! Participants also practice writing place descriptions and explore point of view.

Week Four

Writers will investigate the hero’s journey and use that knowledge to share their own epic adventure. Revision techniques will help turn a chosen freewrite into a polished piece of writing.
