Do you dread teaching grammar because

  • It’s not your forté?
  • Your kids think it’s an arbitrary set of rules?
  • Rules don’t stick for your kids?
  • Workbooks are boring (but you don’t know any other way)?

What most workbooks provide is not a learning experience, it’s rule compliance. But we know that words are not simply parts of speech—they contain meaning!

Let Brave Writer® release you from the shackles of traditional grammar instruction!

Class Overview

Made With You in Mind

We add enchantment to even the most traditional subjects. Often when it comes to teaching grammar, we stick hard and fast by the rules. (And the workbooks.)

In fact, we’ve been so ingrained with the rule-based system that we don’t even know HOW to play with grammar anymore.

What happens when we explore verbs, nouns, and adjectives in the context of how we actually use them?

We’ll show you!

Families come to us for a playful connection to organic learning.

  • Instead of sentence diagramming, we play!
  • Words spring to life in fresh ways, making kids curious
  • Kids discover relationships between words that make the ‘rules’ true

Kids are stronger in grammar when they understand how words work, instead of memorizing rules.

The best part?

Groovy Grammar Workshop is a family class.

  • One fixed price for the whole family. No extras, no fees.
  • You and all of your kids are registered! (Even your spouse if they want!)
  • Grammar is done for all your kids for this year in one shot.

Activities are done all together as a family, then you, the parent, check in with our writing coach at your convenience.

Independent teens (13-14 years old) who are ready to read the material and engage in writing activities on their own are welcome to post separately in class.

There’s no doubt your kids will benefit from developing a healthy and playful relationship with grammar.

The biggest surprise for parents is that this experience is so transformative for you, too!

Week by Week

Week One

Families delve into the whimsical, wonderful world of words. Writers will find words, make up words, classify words, and move words around to label their environment in new and unusual ways.

Week Two

This week, participants see how their Word Collections from last week reveal the inner workings of grammar. They conclude the week with a choice of two activities: 1) creating a Fictionary, or 2) creating Word Sculptures.

Week Three

Families explore the poem "Jabberwocky" by Lewis Carroll from Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There (1872). They analyze the nonsense words in the poem to see how the words work together to create meaning from apparent nonsense.

Week Four

In the final week, families craft their own “Jabberwocky” poems and address niggling grammar questions.

Word on the Street

When I began this class I thought of grammar as a much more structural, immovable part of the writing process. I by no means thought of it as a way to unleash creativity. That has changed because of this workshop.

Laura (Parent)

This course has helped me understand WHY I have not previously liked grammar and how to not pass that along to my children!

Susan (Parent)

My children have grown very much these past few weeks. They have begun to enjoy writing and have had so much fun coming to me and telling me all the new words they are discovering through independent reading. They used to fight me over writing, not anymore!

Jen (Parent)

Me and my siblings grew in our enjoyment. This is because we slowly started to like grammar more and more!

Charlie, 11
