Note: The Writer's Jungle Online is formerly known as Kidswrite Basic
To participate, you do not need to own The Writer's Jungle.
You have a child who hates writing
- Or, your child is so prolific at writing, you're afraid you aren't helping her enough.
- Or, your child writes well, but the results are wooden and tedious to read.
- Or, your child has the best imagination ever, but punctuation, spelling, and mechanics are atrocious.
- Or, you're afraid of writing yourself and have been avoiding it for, oh, the last (yes, you admit it) four years. Gulp!
You're in the right place
The Writer's Jungle Online (formerly Kidswrite Basic) enrolls you with your child(ren) in this class. Parents enroll with their children ages 9-14 or with older children who need remedial help in writing. Whether you love to write or fear it, whether your kids are naturally inclined to write or dread it, our instructors will support and coach you, the parent, in creating a healthy and happy writing partnership with your child(ren) that will last you the rest of your home education journey. Our instructors provide direct feedback on your children's writing, in dialogue with you, so that you will learn how to be that coach to your children once class ends.
If you're new to Brave Writer
The Writer's Jungle Online is where to begin. It's the foundational Brave Writer course. You'll participate using our customized online classroom. The Writer's Jungle Online guides you through the first 9 chapters of The Writer's Jungle. It offers an environment where you receive support, modeling, and gentle accountability to complete the processes described in the manual. Other families are enrolled with you in the class. You'll all receive feedback, support, and coaching from one of our amazing instructors.
You do not need to purchase a copy of The Writer's Jungle. You do not need to own a copy of the manual to participate in class. All relevant materials are provided in the class itself.
If you have already worked through The Writer's Jungle independently, you will not find new material in this class. You will find help, answers to questions, specific insight into your child's process, personal input from a talented instructor, and the gentle accountability of due dates.
Brave Writer is a "less is more" company and we do not over burden your family with busy work or "extras." If you have already enjoyed The Writer's Jungle on your own and feel you've adopted its principles and practices, try a different class:
If you own The Writer's Jungle and have not successfully managed to execute it, then The Writer's Jungle Online will provide you with the structure, support, and modeling you seek.
Details about The Writer's Jungle Online
Thousands of families have discovered that writing doesn't have to be a battleground, but can be a journey into the unique, creative, quirky minds that your kids share with you verbally every day. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to be the conduit to a successful transcription of all that energy and insight so that others get to discover what incredible human beings your kids really are. And, of course, you also want them to write well to reassure yourself that your kids are getting the education you always wanted them to have.
This course covers the following skills
- Communication We play a game to get you started!
- Keen observation The skill needed to dig out the rich vocabulary lurking inside your child
- Freewriting The breakthrough tool that has unleashed thousands of blocked writers
- Revising Practices and permission to get in there with your kids and help
- Editing The mechanics mop up
- Publishing Share that great writing with interested readers
These skills are taught in entirely new ways not seen in other writing programs. In this class, parents interact directly with the instructor in a private classroom. The instructor posts assignments and the homeschooling parents post student writing and questions. As you work with your children at home, the instructor will support you, answer your questions, and give you guidance so that you succeed in becoming your child's best writing coach and ally. Our aim is to make it possible for you to be your child's writing instructor so that you don't have to rely on anyone else!
We've found that the class environment leads to a rich learning experience for you. Not only will you receive personal feedback on your children's writing, but you will also be able to read the writing of other homeschooled children and the instructor's feedback to those families. Because homeschooling can be an isolating experience, we've discovered that our online classes offer what an online tutorial can't: a chance to be exposed to lots of writing by kids at all ages and stages of growth.
This experience gives you more confidence when assessing your own child's development. (In fact, we find that the experience is usually enormously reassuring since the majority of homeschooling parents tend to be a little nervous that their own children are not performing at a high enough level.)
The Writer's Jungle Online gives you the chance to develop your writing coach skills while providing your children with valuable feedback, assignment deadlines and the joy of writing for an audience. Please join us!
The Writer's Jungle Online offers a reduced price for each additional child you enroll.

Class Structure Description #
Brave Writer online classes are specially designed with the busy homeschooling parent in mind. Classes last anywhere from four to six weeks. We offer courses that address a specific writing need so that you can take the ones that suit your family throughout the school year. Short class sessions enable you to work around family vacations, out-of-town swim meets, recovering from wisdom teeth removal, and visits from grandparents. We operate on the quarter system, including a summer session. Our most popular classes repeat each quarter, while others are seasonal.
Our classes meet in a customized online classroom, designed specifically to meet the needs of Brave Writer. Only registered students and the instructor have access to the classroom to ensure your privacy. Assignments and reading materials are posted by Brave Writer instructors each week (no additional supply fees necessary, unless otherwise indicated). Either you (homeschooling parent) or your child (homeschooling student) will visit the classroom daily at your convenience to read helpful information about the current topic or to find the writing assignment. We operate "asynchronously" (which means that the discussion is not live, but that posted information remains available to you in your time zone at your convenience). Instructors check the classroom throughout the day to answer questions and give feedback on writing.
Writing is done at home and then typed into the classroom, and shared with both the instructor and other classmates. You're not required to be online at any specific time of the day. We have students from all over the world participating in our classes so "live" discussion is impossible. Instead, the online classroom enables the instructor to post information and assignments when it is convenient to the instructor. Then, when it is convenient for you, you come to the classroom and read the latest postings.
Instructor feedback to student writing is offered for all participants to read. Writing questions are welcomed and encouraged! That's the point of class. We aim to give you immediate support as you face writing obstacles.
Brave Writer takes seriously the need for encouragement and emotional safety in writing. No student is ever at risk of being humiliated or mistreated. All online dialog is respectful and supportive of your child's process. This is the core of Brave Writer philosophy. You can read about Brave Writer values here.
What makes our program especially unique in the world of online education is that we value a corporate experience. Rather than teaching your child in a tutorial format, we prefer students to have the opportunity to both publish their work for an audience (other students) and also to have the chance to read other student writing. In no other setting is this possible. Schools-in-buildings rarely have students read each other's work. Homeschooled children are rarely in a classroom environment to begin with, so the opportunity to read peer-writing is nil.
Our classes provide an utterly unique experience in the world of writing instruction. Since most writers grow through emulation of good writing, it is a real advantage to Brave Writer kids to get the chance to read the writing of their fellow home-educated peers. They love it! They get to examine and internalize other ways of writing, analyzing and expressing ideas similar to their own. They have the chance to validate and cheer on their peers. And of course, the best part of all is that they receive the praise and affirmation of kids just like them.
Not only that, all instructor feedback is posted to the classroom for all students to read. That means your kids get the benefit of instructor comments on many papers, not just their own. We've noted that this style of instruction is especially effective and hope you'll agree!

The Writer's Jungle Online class is unusual in the Brave Writer list of classes. The parent is enrolled as the "student" in the online classroom. The instructor will teach not just your children, but also you, the parent! You are being taught how to be an effective writing coach to your children, while your children are learning how to write! You will complete the exercises or assignments with your children at home. Then, you will report back to the instructor by posting your children's work. The instructor will give direct feedback on the student work, guiding you in how to become that kind of writing partner to your child for all future writing excursions.
The structure of this class is that the parent is the enrolled student, and the kids are the active participants. Our hope is that you and your children will discover the joy of working together as a writing-editing team over the six weeks you spend in class.
