Note
As Alice Wong makes plain in the introduction to Disability Visibility (Adapted for
Young Adults), “Whether you are disabled or not, some of the ideas and words
may be new or uncomfortable for you, and that is the point!” We encourage you,
the parent, to preread the anthology to decide how this book might fit into your
family’s vision and values and to be prepared to explore its ideas with your teen.
This collection was selected and edited from the essays found in the original
book, Disability Visibility—which offers more essays and covers more mature
content. Older teens may enjoy comparing and contrasting the editorial
changes made to the selections in this young readers edition. (See “Adapted
for Young Readers” in Week Four for more on this topic.)
