I have always been fascinated by how people make and maintain a world together in common. Communication, in all its multitudinous forms and failures, brings people in a dance with their surroundings to examine the world and play with what it could be.

As a child, I found unparalleled thrill in lobbing new turns of phrase (equal parts esoteric and my own non-sensical invention) into family dinner conversation. Playing the conversational jester began as a practical way to avoid eating my peas. But with a little time, and repetition, hearing these words on the lips of my siblings led me to appreciate the very real bond that language could provide. These new words didn't just elicit shock or laughter, they allowed me and my family to relate to each other differently!

Undergraduate and graduate study in the social sciences allowed me to train in academic expression and appreciate its limits. I realized that the classroom and my childhood dinner table weren't so much different after all. With a healthy imagination, collaboration, and a small dose of playfulness, a group of people could come together and create some pretty remarkable things.

These insights inspired me to work in the realm of community education. I have worked for the past five and half years with a team of other teachers, artists, and cultural workers to develop a unique community education curriculum. I have been fortunate enough to travel around the world and collaborate on art projects, reading groups, classes, and community study events for participants ranging from ages six to sixty-four! My most recent project has brought me to Oaxaca, Mexico.
