I remember the exact moment when I fell in love with stories. I was eleven years old, and my class was in the school library to pick out books to check out. I was standing at a shelf of books stumped with choosing a book when my classmate, who would later become the high school valedictorian, pulled a bland, white hardback book from the shelf and handed it to me. “Here, I think you’ll enjoy reading this.” I accepted the book since I didn’t find anything that captured my attention. It was one of the most gratifying decisions I’ve ever made.

I discovered I could travel to other worlds filled with conflict and mayhem, and have adventures with wizards, elves, and dwarves, all from the comfort of my living room. I quickly developed a voracious appetite for words and the magic they conjured. A good story was fuel for my imagination and a cure to my loneliness.

Growing up, I feasted on both Louisiana Cajun cuisine and current events around my family’s dinner table. As the youngest member, I often listened to the exchange of ideas around me and soon realized I had much that I wanted to say. In my high school AP English class, I learned to harness my love for stories and my passion for ideas through writing.

My ability to communicate complex scientific concepts in a manner that made them accessible to others led me to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry and later a certification to teach high school science. After years in research and government, teaching public school was a satisfying blend that combined my love for children and teens with my passion for communication. Then, I found my nexus in homeschooling!

Homeschooling my four children, including my two teenage daughters, has reignited my passion for books and exploring noteworthy ideas surrounding culture, current events, and human nature. Our most memorable homeschool days find us curled up on the couch, reading classic books and diving into deep discussions over tea or hot chocolate. Hearing the tinkle of my children’s laughter as they unearth the treasures I grew up with makes my heart flutter with nostalgia. Seeing the moment, an epiphany flares to life in their brown eyes, and the flurry of their pens sweep across the page fueled by their own unique thoughts is priceless.

The Brave Writer lifestyle is a breath of fresh air for my family and I am so pleased to have the honor of sharing the treasures of Brave Writer with others!
